“This book strikes a universal chord in the psyche of American women.  We relate to Ana’s struggles as she searches for approval in a culture obsessed with thinness.  We applaud her as she learns to define beauty in her own terms.”

“If Ana Tampanna and the other women she wrote about can deal with all these upheavals, disappointments, and transformations in their lives, then so can I.  If Ana Tampanna has the guts to do all the crazy stuff she described in this book, then so do I. This book gave me the courage to face change and take risks. Nothing I want to do seems so difficult or far-fetched now.

Kelly Mollica, PhD  Assistant Professor of Management, Wake Forest University

"I have just re-read part of The Womanly Art of Alligator Wrestling. There are 2 sentences in the chapter called " The Bell Curve" that I wish I could engrave in the front of my mind. They would give me a positive demeanor 24/7. I find little gems each time I open the book."

REVIEW: Book has writer's insights into life's struggles

The Womanly Art of Alligator Wrestling by Ana Tampanna.

By ANNALEE ALLEN

The Lexington Dispatch

April 25, 2002

Ana Tampanna takes an offbeat, amusing and intimate look at the struggles women deal with on a daily basis in her new book, “The Womanly Art of Alligator Wrestling: Inspirational Stories for Outrageous Women Who Survive by Their Wisdom and Wit.”

No, women have not created a new sport. The alligators Tampanna wrestles are really the issues women face in life, such as relationships, having children and confronting body image. She uses her own experiences as examples and offers her solutions to certain quandaries.

I don’t think it is a coincidence that the word “outrageous” is used in the title because some of the ways Tampanna deals with her “alligators” are outrageous. They include: dressing as the Sugar Plum Fairy (on a regular basis), throwing herself a wedding without a groom, and flying to New York to dress as a peacock and parade through Central Park.

Excluding the outrageousness, Tampanna does convey an overall core solution to life’s stresses, and she expresses it exquisitely. She was at a point in her life where fear and loneliness placed her in a weak position. She was convinced she was not good enough.

Fortunately, she discovered a certainty.

“Although religions promise forgiveness, the healing love did not come until I learned to sit in the silence and experience God inside of me. The wonderful Divine Love engulfing me, bathing me with its light, loving all of me, precisely the way I was at that moment. With the silence, and the love, came a still, small voice inside of me, a voice of absolute Truth. The voice began as little whispers from my heart, a reassurance that somehow, someday, it would all work out,” Tampanna writes.

How much easier would life be for everyone if we felt comfortable enough to share these types of experiences with one another? Personally, I am pleased Tampanna was compelled to disclose such a personal event. It assures me that I am not alone.

For those women searching for a connection, reading this book is a clear starting point. Her guidance is specifically for women and allows one to see through differences, revealing a higher level of correlation within the gender.

Tampanna lives in Winston-Salem with her husband and two children and is a motivational speaker who focuses on inspiring women.

“The Womanly Art of Alligator Wrestling” is divided into several categories with a few chapters in each one — food, culture, parenting, wit and wisdom, sisterhood, even finances. Ana’s writing is funny and forthright. A couple of times, I found myself saying, “I can’t believe she wrote that!”

If you’ve been wrestling a few alligators yourself lately, you can dip into this book from time to time when you need a little humor or inspiration. It may well help you rebuild your feelings of self-esteem and self-worth. Even those of us who are known as a real piece of work."
